Communication Bottleneck

A node in the organizational communication graph that disproportionately routes cross-functional information. When 40% of cross-team communication routes through 2 people, the org is one resignation away from collapse. Zoe detects bottlenecks from metadata alone, without reading any message content.

Why it matters

Communication bottlenecks are hidden organizational vulnerabilities. When critical information flows exclusively through one or two people, the organization becomes fragile to those individuals' departure, illness, or distraction. Worse, bottlenecks slow decision-making—every cross-team decision must route through the constrained node. In practice, companies with severe communication bottlenecks (more than 30% of inter-team communication through two people) show 20–40% longer decision cycles and struggle to execute simultaneous initiatives. They also hide organizational problems: if customer feedback has to flow through a single person to reach engineering, product misalignment goes undetected. Identifying and eliminating bottlenecks is one of the highest-ROI integration activities.

How Zoe reads it

Zoe identifies communication bottlenecks through network centrality analysis on email, Slack, and calendar metadata. The system measures betweenness centrality—what fraction of cross-functional communication paths pass through each individual—and flags nodes above threshold. Zoe also maps what communication actually flows through bottlenecks (financial updates, customer feedback, technical escalations) to quantify the organizational risk. The output includes a visual organizational graph showing bottleneck nodes and the alternative communication paths that should exist, guiding integration planning toward redundancy and resilience within the Culture & People and Delivery & Execution dimensions.
